Week Six: reflection

Overall, I am quite happy with how the first three chapters have developed. They provide a good introduction to the setting and the characters, as well as the feeling of the overall story. I'm also quite proud of how I described the tension happening between Alex and Mark, as for most of the book they are in a state of are-we-aren’t-we, and I believe that I have shown that quite well.

Areas of concern for me would be where Carlos and Jaemin’s relationship comes in, specifically in terms of how physical it is. They are still young, both of them only sixteen at the beginning of the story, and whilst there is nothing explicit, I’m worried that all they do is kiss each other. In future chapters I want to explore their relationship more, especially in terms of their differences. Jaemin is much more laid back in terms of consequences for his actions, meaning he doesn’t care about smoking or his grades. Carlos on the other hand, is a little more uptight and clean cut, focusing on his grades at school and keeping himself as healthy as possible. They both care deeply about each other, even if they show it in different ways; Carlos wanting to keep them both happy and set them up for a healthy, balances relationship in a more practical sense. Jaemin on the other hand is more about in the moment expressions of affection, making him do things for Carlos in the spur of the moment. I hope to show this in future chapters without it seeming forced, which could be difficult as I intend on writing the whole story from Alex’s point of view.
